Teen Build Takes on a New Name

& a New Vision

Youth United Kick off - April 2005

March 15, 2005

When it was dedicated in June, the home belonging to Ruby McBride and fondly known as “The Teen Build House” was the first Habitat home in our area to be built and funded primarily by youth. However, while it was built by kids from area church groups and high schools, much of the vision and planning came from a team of dedicated adults.

Ideally, a Habitat build gives those involved the opportunity to develop leadership and planning skills in addition to learning to build a house.  Therefore, North Willamette Valley Habitat for Humanity is pleased to announce a new affiliation with Habitat for Humanity International’s Youth United program. This program encourages participation in every step of the building process including recruiting groups, raising funds, creating publicity opportunities, and planning the home, as well as coordinating and executing the actual building of the house. Additionally, the affiliate will have opportunities for grant monies and in-kind donations through this program.

This project begins in October with the Youth Steering committee taking the lead and will “officially” kick off with an event in April 2005.  Team recruitment and fundraising will take place over the next year and the ground breaking is scheduled for April 2006.  The home will be dedicated in the fall of 2006.

Affiliate staff have laid the groundwork for the program and applied for a $5,000.00 grant that requires a steering committee of youth between the ages of 11 and 18.  At press time the following students have agreed to participate in the grant process and be the founding members of the steering committee. Megan Leslie – Silverton Friends Church, Sara Leslie – Silverton Friends Church, Jesse McBride – Mark Twain Middle School and Homeowner partner, Emily Rowley – Silverton High School, Clint Dennis - French Prairie Middle School. So, be watching future newsletters for articles (written by a teen) about the exciting progress of our Youth United Teen Build project.
